Open Community Encounters
Co-creating our future through conversation
We invite you to join people from different neighbourhoods in and around Sophiatown to connect and share thoughts, ideas and possibilities to collectively create a new story for South Africa.
We have had enough of division, line drawing and camps fighting each other. We are interested in a new story for South Africa that forges an “us” story for “our” country instead of one that reinforces separation.
If we hurt, let’s hold one another.
If we are angry, let’s express it safely, where people can listen.
If we dream a new dream, let’s inspire each other.
As the National Development Plan’s Vision 2013 states, we see a future where:
We have created a home where everybody
feels free yet bounded to others; where
everyone embraces their full potential.
We are proud to be a community that cares.

Who are “we”?
Alison Gitelson, Susan Williams and Petro Janse van Vuuren are three coaches who have come together to create a space for open community encounters. All three of us live in the suburbs around Sophiatown and we dream of a real “New South Africa.” By the next encounter, we hope that this “we” includes you.
